Safety Committees Move Into Action

Eric Barfield, Secretary of the NBAA Safety Committee, recently returned from an extensive two-day Committee meeting at the Hewlett-Packard aviation facility in San Jose, California. Consensus revealed top safety issues currently impacting business aviation include: Safety Culture, Runway Excursions, Ground Damage, and Fatigue. Numerous initiatives are underway to improve safety in each of these areas.

Eric is also heavily involved with the South Carolina Aviation Safety Council. His association with both of these organizations led to some quick action recently. NTSB findings on the September 2008 Learjet crash here in Columbia revealed improper tire pressure as a leading contributing factor. At the request of NBAA leadership, Eric held a conference call with fellow SC Aviation Safety Council members Keat Pruszenski of Michelin Aircraft Tire and Cliff Jenkins of Milliken & Company to discuss how to raise awareness of this important safety issue. Within twenty-four hours, tire safety recommendations were formulated and posted to the NBAA website.

This exposure to the aviation safety community adds value to the risk management process by keeping us abreast of the latest best practices that we can pass on to our clients.
